Bubbling Tides

Overview

The Bubbling Tides are a fascinating natural curiosity where the powerful Bay of Fundy tides create an illusion of boiling water along the shore, a unique tidal phenomenon at Wa’so’q – Partridge Island, in Parrsboro. It is the only known event of its kind in the world.

The incoming tide water appears to “boil” as air is forced from porous basalt rock by the rising tides, and is only viewable approximately 2 hours before high tide.

The Mi’kmaw legend connected to this phenomenon is that of Kluskap’s grandmother’s cooking pot. Watch the video below to hear about the legendary cooking pot, Kkijinu Wtuomi, from Elder Dr. Gerald Gloade from the Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre.

Visitors can also experience the phenomenon in-person through a guided tour from the Fundy Geological Museum.
